You are a community pharmacist and you have been asked to counsel a patient. The patient is a 24-year-old male who is seeking advice about cholera before travelling.
To do:
You are expected to explore the patient’s travel plans and risk factors.
Provide appropriate advice on vaccination options and prevention
Provide relevant information to counsel the patient and answer any questions.
You have 10 minutes.

“Hi, I’m going away to Bangladesh next week with friends, someone mentioned they had a cholera vaccine, is this something I need?”

“We’re going to buy a lot of bottled water but we might not always have access to bottled water.”

Referral Criteria for Cholera
The patient develops symptoms of cholera during travel or within 7 days of returning from a cholera-risk area.
Symptoms may include: profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting, rapid dehydration, dizziness, dry mouth, or reduced urine output.
