You are a community pharmacist and you have been asked to conduct a travel risk assessment. The patient is a 21-year-old female who is seeking advice about travel health risks and vaccinations before travelling abroad.
To do:
You are expected to explore the patient’s travel plans and risk factors.
Provide relevant information to counsel the patient and answer any questions.
You have 10 minutes.

“Hi, I’m going abroad as part of my university course and I wanted to check what vaccinations I need.”

“I’ll be going in about 6 weeks’ time.”
“I’ll be there for 8 weeks.”
“Most of the time I’ll be staying in a house in a rural area near Mbale.”
“I’ll be living with a local host family, not in student accommodation or hotels.”
“I expect we’ll eat mostly home-cooked food, but we’ll also eat out locally.”
“I’m not sure if the water will always be safe to drink.”
“We’ll be doing a lot of outdoor fieldwork, like mapping land use and collecting environmental data.”

Referral Criteria for Travel-Related Illness:
The patient develops symptoms suggestive of malaria during travel or after returning from a malaria-endemic area, e.g., high temperature/fever, sweats and chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
The patient experiences fever, flu-like symptoms, or other unusual symptoms during travel or after return that could indicate a serious infection (malaria, typhoid, parasitic infections, etc.), even if prophylaxis or vaccinations were undertaken.
