You are a pharmacist working in a community pharmacy. A 42-year-old male patient has come to the pharmacy seeking advice about gingivitis and how to prevent it.
To do
Explore the patient’s current symptoms.
You are expected to provide counselling information to this patient and answer any questions appropriately. You must provide relevant advice.
You have 10 minutes.

Opening Statement: “I’m a bit worried - my sister was told she’s been diagnosed with gum disease - ‘gingivitis’ I think it’s called and I would like to know a bit more about it and find out if it’s likely that I have it”

Symptoms:
“No, I have not noticed any redness or swelling in my gums.”
“No, my gums have not been bleeding.”
“I haven’t had any pain or soreness in my gums.”
“No, I haven't had any fever.”
“No, I haven't been feeling tired.”
“I haven’t had any weight loss.”
“I’ve got no mouth ulcers or lumps.”
“I’ve not noticed any red or white patches in my mouth.”
No other symptoms
Medical history:
“I was told that I am anaemic a few months ago.”
Medication History:
“I take iron supplements, I think it's called ferrous fum-something.”
Allergies:
“I don’t have any allergies.”
Lifestyle factors:
“I do eat healthy sometimes, like salads and stuff - but when I get busy, it's usually a takeout.”
“I don’t drink that often. I might have a couple of glasses of wine on the weekend.”
“I do smoke - about a pack a day for the last 10 years.”
“I go to the gym a couple of times a week.”
“I work in an office.”
If asked:
“I usually only brush my teeth in the morning for about 30 seconds - I’m too tired before bed.”
“I floss every once in a while.”
Questions to ask (use to prompt the student if they miss these areas):
What is gum disease? Is gingivitis the same thing?
What causes gingivitis?
What are the risk factors for gingivitis?
How can I prevent gingivitis?
