Scenario Tabs
A customer approaches the student in a community pharmacy asking for advice about hayfever symptoms for themselves. The student’s task is to gather all relevant information using the WWHAM framework. The student is NOT required to recommend any treatment or give clinical advice.
Please ensure that this scenario and mark scheme align with the most up-to-date guidelines from the UK NICE and the BNF when using it for your OSCE assessment.
You will need a student pharmacist and an actor for this scenario.
WWHAM framework
W — Who is the medicine for?
W — What are the symptoms?
H — How long have the symptoms been present?
A — Action — what has already been tried?
M — Medication — what medicines is the patient currently taking?
Plus: always check for allergies
You are a pharmacy student on placement in a community pharmacy. A customer approaches you at the medicines counter. Take a history and explain that you will report the information to the pharmacist.

Use the WWHAM framework to gather all relevant information from the customer.

Opening statement: "Hi, could I get some advice about hayfever please?"

"About a week. It comes around the same time every year." |

ACTION — what has already been tried? |
"I tried some eye drops I had left over from last year, but they haven't really helped." If asked: “I don’t know what the name was, I think the box is blue.” If asked: “They didn’t help much last year either.” |

MEDICATION — any prescribed medicines? |
"Yes, I take a tablet for my blood pressure — I think it's called ramipril." If asked about dose: "I'm not sure, I'd have to check." If asked about other conditions:” I only have high blood pressure, nothing else.” |
